Disabled Living provides training designed to suit your exact requirements. It can be delivered here or a premises of your choice. Recent examples of this include: Moving and Handling Training for Nursery Workers This training was commissioned by a children’s day nursery which felt that their workers would benefit from focusing on the theory and practical aspects of moving and handling children. Whilst planning the training, we spoke to the manager in order to identify some specific issues. These included the need to lift two children with special physical needs and the need to work in a building not originally built for this use. The timescale chosen to deliver the training at the nursery was between 5.30pm and 8.30pm. This minimised the impact of taking staff away from their duties and made the practical session as relevant as possible, using cots and changing facilities. The theory session focused on applying back care principles and legislative requirements for pre-school children handling. All scenarios used were based on this age group too. The practical session utilised a child-sized dummy and nursery equipment such as cots, prams and changing areas. The training was very well evaluated. Moving and Handling: Hoist Assessment for Occupational Therapists This training was commissioned by a group of Occupational Therapists who had recently begun to prescribe hoists and undertake additional moving and handling assessments of clients. The overall aim was to increase their confidence and abilities in this area. We spoke to the manager, who advised which hoists could be prescribed and what client groups would be assessed. The one day training course was delivered at the Occupational Therapists’ premises. The morning session was used to review all relevant legislation and professional guidance with regard to handling people with disabilities and issuing equipment. The delegates were facilitated to do this, working in small groups with the required supply of books, printed guidance and material. Time was spent talking to the delegates and providing clear reassurance with regard to any concerns they had about their new role. The practical afternoon session was delivered in collaboration with representatives from companies whose equipment the delegates would be prescribing. Delegates used and evaluated a range of hoists and slings, focusing on the clinical reasoning required for each. Moving and Handling People: Delivered to Carers working for a Domicillary Care Agency. This session was delivered at their premises. The morning theory session consisted of Legislation, Back Care, Safe Principles of Moving & Handling and Risk Assessment. The afternoon session consisted of practical moving and handling techniques including the use of equipment and fitting of slings.
