Working safely in the beauty industry requires you to take care of many different things including sterilisation of equipment, identifying and eliminating hazards which are present in the work place and maintaining the standards of your work at all times. This unit will also look into ways of disposing of waste materials correctly and how to ensure that your work area is hygienic.

Being able to have a general good manner and carry out a diverse array of duties as well as your work as a beautician will make you much more employable and give the ability to work in a cost effective manner.

Unit 3

As a beauty therapist it is your job to care for the skin and bodies of your clients to ensure they are sufficiently nurtured for a healthy appearance. Because this is quite a general area of health it is important to know the different structures in place in the body to fully appreciate and care for these.

In this unit of the course we will explore the anatomy of the skin and what it is for as well as some of the more common skin abnormalities which can affect the health and well-being of a person’s skin. As well as this we will move on to show how the skin repairs and regenerates itself and negative factors that can have an impact on this process. By being able to carry out an analysis of the skin, you can accurately identify suitable treatments and products to be used, which is something we will discuss in this chapter also.

Unit 4

Throughout this lesson we will be focusing on the structure of the nail and its composition. We will look at the different strengths of nails and how a healthy nail should grow.

As well as this we will explore different nail conditions and identify which can be treated and which cannot. An understanding of different conditions that could affect your client’s nails is important for any beauty therapist so that you know how to treat any condition which you may come across.

Unit 5

In this unit we will be exploring the necessary skills required to offer eyebrow shaping, tinting and styling to your clients. This may be required when working as a beauty therapist and if you are required to apply a more dramatic look to you clients you may need to apply tints and colour changes to the eyebrows to match a change in hair colour.

We will look at how to shape and manage the eyebrows as well as the best ways to tint both the eyebrows and the eyelashes to create a different effect. After this we will explore how to add fake eyelashes to clients and the procedures needed to do this.

Unit 6

Waxing is an essential beauty technique which is used by all beauty therapists and there are many areas of the body which can be waxed to remove unwanted hair. Using a warm wax and applying this to the skin which bonds with the hair and then is quickly removed is the preferred method of hair removal for most clients in a beauty salon.

Throughout this unit we will explore the various techniques required for doing this and how to go about preparing the client for this process. With careful planning and preparation, as well as the necessary safety precautions, it is possible to make the waxing process very quick and painless. As well as this, the removal of hair in this method takes the roots also, which creates a smooth finish and a longer time between treatments.
