Thank you for your previous enquiry about our Venepuncture courses. Thank you for your interest in our Venepuncture Theory Training Course. This course is for students who are new to working in a medical environment and have been employed as a Phlebotomist/HCA within a Health Care setting or for existing Health Care Professionals where you are required to take blood as part of your job description and are working towards a Certificate of Competence. You can choose to attend a Theory Day in London or Swindon. Training commences at 0915 and finishes at around 1630. Joining Instructions will be sent on acceptance to the course. The overall aim of the course is to teach you Venepuncture using the currently accepted Best Practices to collect of blood complying with National Occupational Standards (NOS) as set by the Department of Health. The content of the course is broken down into a number of Tutorials. Tutorials include: 1. Professional Standards and Code of Practice 2. Health and Safety – Basic Infection Control 3. Introduction to Phlebotomy Equipment and Vacutainer Products 4. Pathology (inc importance of request form validation and sample labelling) 5. Basic Anatomy and Physiology (main veins for selection) 6. Blood Components 7. Principles of Venepuncture 8. Technique (practical based on role play and use of ACF pads) 9. Technical Errors, Complications and Danger Cases 10. Review We use scenario based training backed up with PowerPoint presentation to ensure you get a full appreciation of your role when taking blood. On completion of the day you should have an understanding of the following: • The need for a safe and relaxed environment for both Patient and Phlebotomist; • The need for a kind and professional approach; • The need to identify the patient even in difficult situations; • The correct selection of equipment according to the Request Form and the Patient; • The correct assessment of the Venepuncture site; • The need to maintain a calm approach • The correct application of a tourniquet and cleaning of the site; • The insertion of the needle to minimise distress; • The correct order of draw to prevent cross contamination • The correct procedure should Venepuncture prove unsuccessful; • The inverting, labelling and packing of the obtained samples; • The need to observe the Patient and dress the wound on completion; • The correct Discharging of the Patient

Further Details

On completion of the Theory Day you can apply for continued training up to Certificate of Competence or a One Day Refresher Course if you already have taken blood previously. We can only accept applicants who have completed our One Day Theory Course and have a Hep B Status showing immunity. If you have had Hep B vaccinations but do not have a Status Report we can arrange this at a reduced cost.
