What you will study
The course will provide you with an insight into life and work within the different Public Services, including the skills and fitness levels you need, furthering your knowledge of the law, citizenship and other areas, developing leadership and expedition skills and much more.

Maths and English are key elements of any full-time programme of study in College. If you do not already have a GCSE at grade 9-4 these subjects, you will need to attend sessions allocated on your timetable. These are varied and designed to cater for all ability levels. You will receive advice and guidance regarding the correct level for you.

Skills in Maths and English will support your full-time course, assisting you with assignment writing, research, job applications, presentations, managing your own finances and interpretation of data, to mention just a few. They will also help you in the future, as most employers are looking for ability in these areas. This is why the development of Maths and English is so important, whatever your field of study.

What will I be able to do on completion?

Further study

On successful completion of this programme, to a minimum of Merit standard including achievement of level 2 English, you may wish to progress onto the Subsidiary Diploma in Public Services. Students wishing to progress to the BTEC level 3 Diploma in Public Services will be considered on an individual basis. You may also progress to other Level 3 courses offered at Wakefield College subject to successful applications.

Career opportunities

This course will prepare you with the skills and qualities to progress to a career within a public sector organisation although most of the Uniformed Public Services have minimum age requirements, so you will need further experience and training before you can apply. This course is just the first step on your way to a career with organisations such as the Police, Fire Service, Prison Service, Armed Services and many more.

How will I be assessed?

Assessment will occur continually throughout the programme. You will have unit assignments to complete and will be assessed on your group and individual work. You will be assessed using a combination of workbooks, written assignments, presentations as well as oral and practical assessments. Each individual unit and the full award are graded at Pass, Merit or Distinction level and your final portfolio grade will be determined through an aggregate of all the unit grades you achieve over the programme.
