Under the Licensing Act 2003, anyone authorising the retail sale of alcohol will have to hold a personal licence. In order to qualify for a personal licence, an applicant must hold a licensing qualification. This qualification is specifically designed to meet the statutory requirements of the Licensing Act 2003.

Assessment
Assessment is via a multiple-choice exam with 40 questions. All questions test the knowledge of the person taking the exam. It covers all aspects of the law and social responsibilities in relation to the sale of alcohol to the public. It also has the added benefit of being the only qualification of its type to have a section of the exam that candidates must pass – this is called the compulsory section.
