What topics are covered by the course?

What you will study
The pathway that we offer is: - Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Domestic Plumbing and Heating (Gas Fired Water and Central Heating Appliances) within this you will look at the following: -
Tightness test, purge, commission and de-commission gas pipework up to 35mm 1 diameter in small natural gas installations
Understand how to organise resources within BSE
Understand and apply domestic cold water system installation, commissioning, service and maintenance techniques
Understand and apply domestic hot water system installation, commissioning, service and maintenance techniques
Understand and apply domestic central heating system installation, commissioning, service and maintenance techniques
Understand and carry out electrical work on domestic plumbing and heating systems and components
Install, commission and de-commission gas pipework up to 35mm 1 diameter in domestic and small commercial premises
Specific core installation and maintenance
Understand core gas safety principles for natural gas within domestic building services engineering
Maintain gas water heating and wet central heating appliances
Install domestic gas water heaters and wet central heating appliances
Understand and apply domestic sanitation system installation, commissioning, service and maintenance techniques
Install, commission, service and maintain domestic plumbing and heating systems

You will also work towards appropriate Functional Skills qualifications in English and Maths.
Maths and English (and sometimes IT) are key elements of apprenticeship programmes and if you do not already have a GCSE at grade A*-C (or the new grade 9-4) in these subjects you will be required to study Functional Skills at the appropriate levels.
Level 3 is ideal if you are working within the plumbing and heating trade and have a great deal of technical skills and knowledge. You work with minimum supervision and have a good record of safety, fault correction and ensuring that work meets the required standard.


Who should attend?

Entry Requirements

You will need to be employed in the industry and have already completed an intermediate (Level 2) apprenticeship in Plumbing and Heating. You will also need literacy and numeracy qualifications at A - C (or the new grade 9 - 4) or Functional skills Level 2. If you do not have these, we can assess your current levels of literacy and/or numeracy.

A skills check will be carried out to ensure that your job role gives you access to the type of work required for assessment to meet City & Guilds criteria.


You will need to be employed in the industry and have already completed an intermediate (Level 2) apprenticeship in Plumbing or have substantial relevant work experience. You will also need literacy and numeracy qualifications at Level 2. If you do not have these, we can assess your current levels of literacy and/or numeracy.

A skills check will be carried out to ensure that your job role gives you access to the type of work required for assessment to meet City & Guilds criteria.

What will I be able to do on completion?

Further study

On successful completion of this programme you will be able to progress to our Level 4 HNC Construction and the Built Environment (Building services pathway) or alternatively to our Level 5 Higher Apprenticeship programme.

How will I be assessed?

Assessment is continuous over the duration of the course, through both practical activity in the workshops and multiple choice theory testing. You will also be expected to complete unit assignments and gas competencies are assessed on block release.
