Beginners Digital Photography

Don’t worry about not knowing the terminology - our session will help you get to grips with the manual controls of your camera. You will learn in a very practical, hands-on environment ensuring you gain the confidence required to use your camera. Using the manual controls correctly will show you how your photos will be that much more - photogenic!


Stuart Pearson is our creative and experienced tutor guiding you through this engaging one day session. Stuart will help you understand an array of methods to help improve your photography skills. Putting into practice your newly learnt skills during our session at the historic and hidden gem of North London, Bruce Castle.


“What will I learn?”

Our beginners class will cover the following topics:

Understanding the fundamentals of Exposure (ISO, Shutter speed/ Aperture) and how to control Shutter Speed and Aperture for creative effect (Subject Motion and Depth of Field)
Using the Exposure Compensation function in difficult lighting
Introduction to Composition; creating subject emphasis, seeing the picture and simple techniques to visualise and create better pictures
Control & application of the Auto-focus system when required for moving / static subjects, and impact on depth of field
White Balance; optimising natural colour and avoiding unwanted colour tints
How to avoid ‘camera shake’ to prevent image blur and produce sharp images
Real life application of these newly learnt techniques during our practical session


“How long is the class?”

A full day, starting at 10am and finishing at 5pm. During the morning session Stuart will go through some of the basic photography need to knows, helping you to get the best out of your camera. This will be an interactive session, covering the essentials for novices to the photography world.


After lunch we head off for a 3 hour practical workshop session, putting in to practice those newly learnt techniques. The workshop is undertaken at the impressive setting of Bruce Castle Park. You will take in the sights whilst capturing some great picture moments. Stuart will be guiding you through the techniques learnt in this practical environment.



“What will my tutor be like?”

Stuart Pearson is an experienced creative and versatile photographer producing images with visual impact.


Stuart's background is in feature film Post-production with 12 years as digital film imaging specialist, working on major films such as Harry Potter, Lara Croft-Tomb Raider, Gosford Park, Shanghai Knights, and the Bond 007 movies Tomorrow Never Dies and The World Is Not Enough.


After more than 12 years in movie Post-production Stuart switched full-time to professional stills photography. As a dedicated professional Stuart thrives on creative and technical challenges, and recognizes the value of collaboration and strong inter-personal relationships.



“Do I need any previous knowledge?”

This class assumes no previous knowledge in using the manual controls of a digital camera. As long as you have had experience in taking regular pictures and can say ‘cheese!’ you are ready to go!



“What do I need to bring?”

You will be required to bring in your digital camera, a memory card and a charger for this class. It will help you get the most out of your camera and put all those buttons and functions to good use!



“Should I be aware of anything else?”

Please note that the afternoon session involves a 3 hour workshop in which we will walk around Bruce Castle Park. Should you suffer from a disability or any issues that may affect your mobility during this session please let us know in advance.
