Death, dying and loss are natural and principal aspects of the human experience, and the resulting grief and bereavement issues affect all of us at various times in our lives. The grief process is complex, and is influenced by numerous factors, including circumstances, cultural issues, and rituals. The grief and bereavement that precede and follow death or loss are ongoing, and are felt in many aspects of everyday life. There is a growing interest amongst professional groups in developing enhanced expertise in the generic area of grief and bereavement. To address the deficiency of opportunities in this area in the Higher Education sector, Professional Studies at the Institute of Continuing Education has developed a named Certificate of Higher Education in Grief and Bereavement Studies to develop individual’s skills and understanding in the areas of death, dying, loss and the process of grief and bereavement. This course is designed to meet the needs of a variety potential student groups for professional development in the area of grief and bereavement. These groups include the emergency services, healthcare professionals, hospice workers, chaplains and clergy, counsellors and bereavement support workers from the voluntary sector and funeral directors. Whilst each of these groups of workers have experience and expertise in specific aspects of grief and bereavement, this course will enable them to widen their understanding and knowledge of the subject as a whole. Applications are welcome on a modular basis or for the full certificate. Closing date for applications is August 4th 2008
