As a medical administrator or receptionist you will fulfil a very important role within a health care environment. You will be part of the ‘front - line’ staff and often the first port of call for patient and relative enquiries, either by telephone or in person. You will also be involved in the electronic “Choose and Book” scheme. The impression that you make on these people will influence their opinion of the organisation that you work for. You will also work as part of a team and liaise with a variety of colleagues and health care professionals.

The medical receptionist or administrator can choose to work within general practice, hospitals, clinics or private practice.

To become a good medical administrator / secretary, you will need a wide range of knowledge and skills. Therefore, it is important to receive the appropriate training. The Certificate in Medical Administration will give you a stepping stone into your career.

To achieve the Certificate candidates must achieve 32 credits overall completing units 220, 221, 331 and 332, and to achieve the Diploma candidates must a minimum of 49 credits overall including units 221, 331-334 (39 credits) + 330 (14 credits) or 221, 331-334 (39 credits) + 220 (6 credits) + min 4 credits from any of 225, 335, 805-809

Both Administrator programmes are available for full or part time study in the classrom/workplace with some distance learning. The Certificate and Diploma are the only nationally recognised qualifications designed for medical receptionists / administrators in the UK and are accredited by Ofqual within the Qualifications and Credit Framework.

Students who successfully complete the full programme are eligible to become Members of AMSPAR. They are then entitled to post-nominals after their name.
