This is our full two day Course Itinerary. Courses start at 9.30am and finish at 5.00pm, with a one hour lunch-break and morning and afternoon tea breaks:

DAY ONE:
• Welcome and introductions.
• What is phlebotomy? Why are you here?
• Where do phlebotomists work?
• A brief history of phlebotomy & early day bloodletting.
• Introduction to the theory and practice of phlebotomy.
• Professionalism: How to interact professionally with patients and staff.
• PRACTICAL SESSION 1 - Equipment familiarisation
• Occupational hazards and appropriate precautions.
• What are blood borne pathogens?
• PRACTICAL SESSION 2 - using a tourniquet and identifying suitable veins.
• Anatomy and physiology appropriate to drawing a blood specimen.
• PRACTICAL SESSION 3 - practice session - handling and using the equipment
• Define venous, arterial and capillary blood.
• Different departments, different tests.
• In the laboratory - blood tests and common profiles.
• Blood collection systems and devices.
• Safety First.
• Assess and select suitable sites used for venepuncture as well as locations to avoid.
• Describe and utilise the required steps to perform routine venepuncture.
• PRACTICAL SESSION 4 - practice session - handling and using the equipment 2

• Procedure Notes and Cautions.
• Understand how pre-analytic and hidden errors affect the integrity of a specimen.
• Actions that ensure safety during performance of a venepuncture.
• Procedural steps required to positively identify the patient.
• Complications of venepuncture and how to handle them.
• PRACTICAL SESSION 6 - approaching the patient. Handling queries and objections.
• PRACTICAL SESSION 7 - obtaining multiple specimens (using artificial arms), request cards, bottle selection and order.
