This course has been designed particularly for speakers of Far East Asian languages who are familiar with Chinese characters. By the end of this module you should be able to: understand a range of familiar everyday expressions and vocabulary by listening and reading, learn to pronounce Mandarin correctly, including distinguishing between similar initials, finals and four tones of Mandarin Chinese, use cultural set phrases. Topics covered could include numbers, dates, work, food, hobbies, health, shopping, holidays etc. Teaching is communicative, e.g. short role-plays, games and other language-centred activities.
