Aims:

To enable you to develop the skills and knowledge to care for those patients with palliative care needs within your own area of practice. The holistic and multi-professional approach that underpins palliative care is incorporated throughout the module.

Academic Award: This course is a 20 credit module at level 6 by Thames Valley University.

Module Content:
 7 single study days over 18 weeks.
 The module will explore the philosophy and principles of end of life care: assessment and symptom management; communication issues and skills; loss, grief and bereavement and legal and ethical issues. New models and frameworks used in the delivery of palliative care will be evaluated and discussed with reference to clinical application.
 The assessment process consists of a formative presentation and a summative case study.

Entry requirements:
 First level Registered Nurse (Adult) or Allied Health Professional.
 Current registration with an appropriate professional body.
 Provide written evidence of a degree, diploma or single level 5 module or provide evidence of work based learning by provision of a portfolio, which provides application of theory to practice.
 Be in clinical practice for a minimum of 45 hours per fortnight during the 18-week module.
 The care area must have sufficient adult patients requiring palliative care to enable you to meet the learning outcomes.
 Be supported by your manager to undertake the module.
