Aims:
To enable you to develop the skills and knowledge to care for those patients with palliative care needs within your own area of practice. The holistic and multi-professional approach that underpins palliative care is incorporated throughout the module.
Academic Award: This course is a 20 credit module at level 6 by Thames Valley University.
Module Content:
7 single study days over 18 weeks.
The module will explore the philosophy and principles of end of life care: assessment and symptom management; communication issues and skills; loss, grief and bereavement and legal and ethical issues. New models and frameworks used in the delivery of palliative care will be evaluated and discussed with reference to clinical application.
The assessment process consists of a formative presentation and a summative case study.

Entry requirements:
First level Registered Nurse (Adult) or Allied Health Professional.
Current registration with an appropriate professional body.
Provide written evidence of a degree, diploma or single level 5 module or provide evidence of work based learning by provision of a portfolio, which provides application of theory to practice.
Be in clinical practice for a minimum of 45 hours per fortnight during the 18-week module.
The care area must have sufficient adult patients requiring palliative care to enable you to meet the learning outcomes.
Be supported by your manager to undertake the module.
