On enrolment, you will attend a two day Induction at the Institute of Chiropodists and Podiatrists training centre in Sheffield. This will prepare you for all aspects of the course. During the course, you will attend at the centre for seminars covering the 8 units which consist of:
i) Personal Development and Reflective Learning
ii) Principles and Philosophy of Healthcare
iii) Structure, Organisation and Function of the Human Body
iv) Clinical Emergencies, Practice Management and Patient Records, Professional Accountability and Communication
v) Anatomy and Physiology of the Lower Limb
vi) Dermatology and Lower Limb Conditions
vii) Pharmaceuticals, Bacteriology, Sterilisation and Hygiene
viii) Practice Management and Working with Patients and Colleagues
Each of these units is supported by a distance learning element with a suggested list of textbooks which will enhance your understanding of the subject matter. Clinical placements with existing chiropodists/podiatrists/Foot Care Practitioners will be made as well as the provision of a personal tutor (mentor). Free student membership of the Royal Society of Medicine is included, with access to one of the best medical libraries in Europe and full on-line medical web searches.
Two three week periods are set aside for practical instruction. This ensures that you have adequate clinical practise under supervision and covers 200 hours with 100 patient treatments. The entire course equates to 1200 hours of study and is accepted by the City and Guilds Institute as comparable to a primary degree and normally takes approximately 18 months part-time to complete.

In order to enter the course, students are required to have a good educational background and be computer literate. Many students are mature and taking up Foot Health Care as a second career and there is no upper age limit.
On graduation, Associate membership of the Institute of Chiropodists and Podiatrists is available. This will include full professional indemnity insurance (currently £5,000,000), membership of a local branch, attendance at Annual General Meetings, representation at NHS and other committees, a bi-monthly journal, together with all the benefits which you would expect from a long established professional body, with advice and support throughout your career.
