Continuing professional development is increasingly recognised as an essential feature of the caring professions. Self harm/self injury is a complex issue which many people find difficult to understand. It is often mistaken for attempted suicide whereas, for most young people, their self injury is a way of coping with extreme emotional distress. Dealing with self harm can be harrowing and it is important that we are aware of our own needs for support in this work. You find yourself wanting to protect a young person from harming themselves, but it is important not to take away their coping mechanisms. Workers need to be well trained and aware of the issues involved both for themselves, their agency's response to this behaviour and for their young clients. They also need access to support and guidance when working with this issue. This one-day course will help you to understand, and deal with, young people who harm themselves. Who is this course for? We provide quality, cost effective training to individuals and those within organisational settings: Counsellors Therapists Youth workers Teachers Social workers Care workers Health care professionals - nurses, doctors, etc Educational psychologists Prison staff Foster carers Residential care staff What will you learn?
