Single Minute Exchange of Die (SMED) is a systematic approach to reducing machine set up and change over times. Originally devised by Shigeo Shingo of Toyota Motor Company in the early 1950’s, this lean technique can dramatically shorten change-over time from hours to minutes.

Change Over is defined as “the time it takes to change from one product to another and achieve quality goods at running speed”

One of the best visual examples of this technique in action can be seen in F1 motor racing via the ‘pit stop routine’ which takes only a few seconds. In that time, new tyres are fitted, fuel refilled and the drivers visor cleaned. Imagine what you could achieve if you could utilise the same methodology in your workplace.

This course utilises actual video footage of a PRE SMED and a POST SMED machine change process to demonstrate the effectiveness of ths technique.

This course is a must for all Production Managers, Supervisors and Engineers who utilise automated plant and machinery.
