When seeking proofreaders to check their output, publishers often use their own tests to assess the suitability of candidates. Many would-be proofreaders think a good grasp of English is enough to get them through but hit a brick wall when they realise that the trade is more complex. The Gpuss course is written by a proofreader and copywriter, Charlie Hankers, who struggled when embarking on his career because the course he took covered only English language and not real-world proofreading. His course goes into great depth on topics such as typography, setting and style as well as things such as punctuation and the use of proofreading symbols. There has probably never been a time when more material is being published - in books, magazines and online. Anyone publishing serious content will be looking for someone to check it for errors as it will necessarily give their message the edge in a crowded market. Proofreading is very popular among freelancers and homeworkers, but many organisations employ full-time readers in their editorial departments. The same internet that allows people to study the subject is also an ideal conduit for the transmission of raw and corrected documents; working from home allows the proofreader to base both study and work around their own lifestyle. The course's author believes that being informal is the best way to be informative. As a result the course is a delight to work through, as shown by the positive feedback received. The course is also connected to a growing forum community; issues and queries on the course, proofreading in general or anything to do with the written word can be raised here and are often responded to within the hour. The course also introduces students to copy editing, a more advanced subject but one aimed for by many proofreaders. Gaining experience in proofreading and combining this knowledge with one's own background skills in English will stand any prospective editor in good stead for an editorial career.

Further Details

The course is completed online and after enrolling students have one year's access to the website. The course itself takes about 16 to 20 hours to complete and includes three tests. You'll need access to a printer to do one test (the proofreading symbols test), but the vast majority can be done at the computer. Queries and comments can be posted on the associated forum. The course is completely self-assessed and does not result in a formal qualification. It is designed to prepare students for proofreading after passing employers' tests.
