NVQ Level 3 in Electrical Installation (EAL)
general, candidates for this qualification will be responsible for the day-to-day installation and inspection of electrical systems into buildings and structures and the quality of the work they produce, but may have responsibilities for dealing with customers, monitoring and controlling the equipment, resources, with some authority to exercise judgements and make decisions about factors which affect the installation process. Demonstration of safe working practices and procedures are required at all times. Candidates at both levels will have gained an appropriate level of skill ability and acquired sound knowledge and understanding of the relevant techniques, materials, tools and equipment used in order to enable them to carry out the activities, solve related problems, correct any faults within the limits of their authority and ensure the work output meets the required specification standard.
Further Details
SET3/001: Ensure Safe Site Working
This assessment route covers the competencies you need if you are responsible for ensuring safe site working.
You will be required to ensure that the site is safe for work to start by carrying out a risk assessment where the
work will take place, and monitor the site’s safety during and on completion of the work on electrotechnical
systems and equipment.
You will also be required to ensure the site is left in a tidy and safe condition on completion of the work. You
will need to understand the implications of the working environment for health and safety for yourself and other
persons.
SET3/002: Provide Technical and Functional Information
This assessment route covers the competencies you need if you are required to pass on technical or functional
information relating to installations of structured cabling systems.
You will be required to supply technical and functional information accurately on appropriate occasions or at
handover. You need to be able to identify who should receive such information and the level required by the
relevant person for safe operation and maintenance purposes. The information will also include safety
considerations
You will also need to understand who the relevant people are for example those who need to be kept informed
about the electrotechnical system on which you have been working and are likely to be customers, clients or their
representatives.
SET3/011: Diagnose and Correct Faults in Electrotechnical Systems and Equipment
This assessment route covers the competencies you need if you are involved in diagnosing and correcting faults
in electrotechnical systems and equipment and need to take appropriate action.
You will be required to ensure the safe identification of faults and correct the faults by using safe and approved
methods.
You will also need to possess the skill and knowledge to follow correct procedures in identifying the location of
the fault, carry out safe and secure isolation procedures, diagnose the faults in the electrotechnical systems and
equipment, correct faults using safe and approved methods and use test equipment and tools correctly.
SET3/004: Maintain a Healthy and Safe Working Environment
This assessment route covers the competencies you need to maintain a healthy and safe working environment by
ensuring that your own actions do not create any health and safety risks and you do not ignore hazards with
significant risk in your work location. You will need to take sensible action to put things right where you identify
hazards in your work location.
You will also be required to understand the importance of risk assessments and method statements.
SET3/012: Prepare to Install Electrical Wiring Systems, Wiring Enclosures and Equipment
This assessment route covers the competencies you need if you are required to ensure that the necessary wiring
systems, wiring enclosures and equipment are appropriate for the installation, prior to the electrical installation
work taking place.
You will be required to ensure that the wiring systems, wiring enclosures and equipment are suitable for the
installation.
You will also need to show that you understand the application and the meaning of ‘fitness for purpose’ of
wiring systems, wiring enclosures and equipment. You will need to also demonstrate that you understand the
importance of making sure that the intended installation matches the expectations of the relevant person. Also,
you will need to prove that you have confirmed that the wiring systems, wiring enclosures and equipment you are
going to install are suitable for the working environment where the installation will take place.
SET3/013: Install Electrical Wiring Systems, Wiring Enclosures and Equipment
This assessment route covers the competencies you need if you are required to carry out the installing of wiring
systems, wiring enclosures and equipment.
You will be required to following the correct procedures for the installation of wiring systems, wiring enclosures
and equipment as specified.
You will also need to show that you understand of installing of wiring systems, wiring enclosures and equipment,
the methods for identifying and isolating electrical supply, positioning and fixing components correctly and
those areas which have the potential to be hazardous.
SET3/014: Connect Wiring Systems and Equipment using Safe and Approved Methods
This assessment route covers the competencies you need if you are required to connect wiring systems, wiring
enclosures and equipment.
You will be required to implement the correct procedures for connecting wiring systems, wiring enclosures and
equipment appropriate to the electrical system.
You will also need to show that you understand of connecting wiring systems, wiring enclosures and equipment
and how to check the connection afterwards using safe methods.
SET3/015: Inspect, Test and Commission an Electrical Installation
This assessment route covers the competencies you need if you are required to inspect, test and commission an
electrical installation.
You will be required to carrying out the process of inspecting, testing and commissioning electrical installations
in a safe manner and in the correct sequence as prescribed by the IEE wiring regulations: requirements for
electrical installations (BS7671)
You will also need to show that you understand of how to commission an electrical installation bearing in mind
the constraints imposed by legislation and regulations, how to select and use the appropriate testing equipment
