What topics are covered by the course?
What you will study You will study eight units over a one/two year period depending on your mode of study. Mandatory units required to meet the requirements of the professional industry institutions:- * Design principles and application. * Health, safety and welfare. * Application of Building Services Engineering. * Group project. In addition the following units will be completed:- * Applied mathematics * Project management for Building Services Engineering. With two options being selected from:- * Employability skills. * Personal and professional development. * Use of ICT * Work based learning and assessment Your Course Structure The academic year is structured over two semesters. Delivery of the course is typically through formal and informal class sessions in small groups (70%); work based learning or organised industry related activity (15%); research and independent study (15%). How you will learn Through a combination of formal and informal sessions including practical, resource based learning activities with tutorial back-up, together with work-based learning. The aim of the course is to link with industry, and guest speakers and site visits for full-time learners will form an integral part of the course.Tutorial back-up relates both to the subject matter and individual mentoring.
Who should attend?
Entry Requirements This course is intended for those who have successfully completed a Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeship in a Building Services related discipline, City & Guilds Level 3 6129 (Plumbing) or City & Guilds Level 3 2330 (Electrical installation) and also those who have successfully completed the BTEC Level 3 Diploma/Extended Diploma in Construction and the Built Environment (Building services pathway) or an equivalent qualification. Mature applicants with relevant work experience will be considered.
What will I be able to do on completion?
Further study A key progression route from this course is to year 2/3 of a degree or honours degree. This course also provides a progression route to the professional qualifications offered by CIBSE. Career opportunities Building Services engineers manage and design the installation of services within a vast range of different kinds of developments. There are employment opportunities with a wide variety of organisations, from multi-national companies, local authorities, the NHS, and educational institutions to small partnerships specialising in particular aspects of Building Services.

Continual assessment throughout the academic year incorprating both assignment based work (70%) and presentation work (30%).
