What’s covered?

Once you are booked on the course, you will receive a copy of our study guide. We highly recommend that you read this in detail to prepare you for the course.

Day 1 Brazing, HSE, Regulations

The course kicks off with a introduction that outlines exactly what to expect over the next 5 days. We go right into brazing techniques, health and safety and the regulations that effect the RAC industry.

Day 2 Basic Vapor Compression Cycle (in more detail), Enthalpy Charts, BS EN 378

It’s time to really understand the basics of refrigeration and air conditioning. These fundamentals are often the ‘little gaps’ in knowledge, that make troubleshooting so much easier. Understand how the system works and you will know how to fix it. To help explain these principles, we go into more detail and introduce pressure enthalpy charts into the equation. We’ll wrap the day up with BS EN 378:2008. This is the British Standard that we must all work to and an important part of the 2079 exam.

Day 3 Pressure Testing, Evacuation & Dehydration, Charging Zeotropic Refrigerants, Commissioning, Recovery

Today we delve even deaper into BS EN 378:2008 and talk about exactly what needs to be done to ensure you are working to industry standards. We’ll explain the exact procedures and how to do them. Time permitting we might even start with some practical rig familiarisation.

Day 4 Practical Demonstration and equipment familiarisation

Now it’s time to get your hands dirty, but not without a risk assessment. We’ll put everything you have learned into practice. Component features and functions, state of refrigerant in the system, repair procedures and record keeping and more. You will get to commission the training rig and use your ‘Rules Of Thumb’ to know that it is working correctly. A fun, but busy day.

Day 5 Practical & Online Examinations

Now it’s time to prove your worth. Exam day! We will start with the online exams which are up to 40 questions depending on the qualification that you are doing. Then, one candidate to one training rig, you will need to prove to our assessors that you can competantly repair, pressure test, evacuate, charge with refrigerant, commission and recover the refrigerant back into a cylinder.

Who wants to do it?

Practically everyone. But this is not a fast track way into the refrigeration and air conditioning industry. Do not expect to be put on this course if you have never touched a set of gauges before, let alone worked within the industry. We will never deny the years of training that RAC engineers have to go through to become skilled in this industry. If you dont have the experience, then please talk to us about our introduction to refrigeration course.

What do you get for your money?

Course exams, self study booklet, sample questions and hopefully a fancy C&G 2079 Certificate.

Further Details

This qualification is for those working within the refrigeration and air-conditioning industry who need to meet the legal requirements for working with Fluorinated Gases, otherwise known as F-Gases and other Ozone Depleting Substances. The course includes both theory and practical training on the requirements and procedures to test, fill and recover refrigerant and is based upon the Fluorinated and Greenhouse Gas Regulations 2009, EC842/006 and EC303/2008.

The course will cover the following 9 learning outcomes

■1 – Identify basic systems, terms, principles, units and how these relate to theory and thermodynamics of vaport compression cycles and refrigerants
■2 – Identify the causes and effects of global warming and climate change
■3 – Identify causes and effects of ozone depletion
■4 – Identify stationary refrigerant, air conditioning and heat pump system components, functions and leakage risk
■5 – Identify the hazards and safe working practices for the installation, commissioning and handling of refrigerants
■6 – Fabricate and examine pipework
■7 – Undertake pressure testing, evacuation and record completion
■8 – Undertake refrigerant charging, leak checking and record keeping
■9 – Undertake recovery of refrigerant and oil and prepare for disposal
The City & Guilds 2079 does not require renewal every three years. The assessment consists of a multiple choice question paper undertaken online and a practical assessment.
