This series of 6 workshops, run over an 18 month period, build on one another enabling candidates to explore and develop both interpersonal and management skills. This helps them to develop greater understanding of what it means to be effective as a manager, and put those skills into practice back at work.

Models and theories are repeated in several workshops in order to help delegates see their relevance in different circumstances.

The programme is aimed at those who already have some responsibility for managing others, but have had little or no formal management training. It would ideally suit:

Workshop 1 Understanding Motivation

This one day workshop introduces delegates to some of the many theories around motivation. It aims to explain how people are motivated at work and allow delegates to explore different approaches.

By the end of the workshops delegates will be able to:

Describe the Herzberg two factor theory of motivation and how this applies in the workplace
List the 4 key workplace motivators and describe their practical application
Explain how self awareness is the key to understanding motivation and describe some of the techniques for increasing awareness of self and others
Identify and use practical motivation techniques that are the most appropriate approach for individual team members

Workshop 2 Effective communication skills

This one day workshop introduces delegates to the principles of good communication. It provides insights, tips and techniques to allow delegates to communicate effectively with their colleagues at all levels within the organisation.

By the end of this workshop delegates will be able to:

Describe how we communicate and list some of the common problems with communication
Explore techniques and strategies for improving interpersonal relationships and avoiding some of the common pitfalls in face-to-face, telephone and written communication
Describe how to write more effective memos and emails

Workshop 3 Time Management

This one day workshop provides delegates with tools and techniques designed to help achieve the tasks and goals that are important to them and to take control of both their personal and working lives.

By the end of the workshop delegates will be able to:

Explore and practice a technique for identifying key areas of responsibility and activities in order to prioritise goals
Describe how to set personal and team goals and objectives that are practical and well formed, including a technique for setting qualitative goals
Explain how to create long and short term plans for achieving goals and objectives
Explore techniques for planning and prioritising tasks and activities
Describe strategies for dealing with the unexpected and time thieves

Workshop 4 Performance Management

This 2 day workshop aims to establish how Performance Management contributes to the overall success of the business, introduce and confirm any key company processes and explore the key skills for managing performance, taking the opportunity to practice a safe environment

By the end of the workshop delegates will be able to:

Explain the need for using an effective Performance Management system, the relevant processes and procedures, for maximising performance and dealing with poor performance
Describe a technique for effectively measuring current performance
Demonstrate the skills used by an effective performance manager, including communication, problem solving, objective setting and action planning
Demonstrate the skills and techniques used in facilitating effective feedback
Describe the personal attitudes and behaviours that get in the way of carrying out effective performance management

Workshop 5 Developing the individual

This one day workshop aims to help managers identify and deliver effective learning and development solutions for individuals. It explores a variety of simple tools and techniques, both new and currently used to make improving a team members’ performance easier and more effective in the long term.

By the end of this workshop delegates will be able to:

Identify the learning and development needs of individuals in the team
Describe the role of preferred learning styles
Identify a variety of different methods for meeting learning and development needs and evaluate which method will be most appropriate
Define objectives for learning and development activities
Describe the use of effective delegation skills to develop individuals
Demonstrate a simple coaching model for improving individual performance
Describe how to evaluate the success and impact of learning and development activities undertaken

Workshop 6 Managing and Developing the Team

This two day workshop introduces delegates to the concept of taking a balanced approach to management by understanding the impact of management style on the team. It also introduces the basic principles of presentations for communicating with the team.

By the end of the workshop delegates will be able to:

Describe their responsibilities as a manager for balancing the focus on task team and individual
Describe their preferred management style, different management styles, and when it is appropriate to use them
Explain the process and skills for delegating effectively
Describe how to identify the learning and development needs of team members and explain how to best meet those needs
Prepare and deliver a short presentation to a group
Define their personal preferences for dealing with conflict and establish alternative approaches
Describe the different stages of team development and the use of team building tools
