Introduction to Counselling Skills

What topics are covered by the course?

The emphasis of the course is skills developments you will be introduced to person centred counselling principles of Carl Rogers and explore core conditions, such as empathy. You will explore basic helping skills such as responding, attending, active listening, and reflecting. You will explore the use of silence and being concrete. You will gain an understanding of different helping relationships. Explore self awareness and experience the benefit of role play.

Who should attend?

The course is for adults working with individuals in private, voluntary, or statutory organisations. Or for adults who would like to understand and improve their communication skills, for personal skills development. For adults who would like an opportunity of a taster in counselling skills, which they may wish to develop further in the future. Or for adults working in Health, Social Care, Probation, Mental Health, Teaching or Social Work.

What will I be able to do on completion?

Understand the principles of counselling; demonstrate an understanding of the core conditions related to person centred counselling such as empathy, have an understanding of the therapeutic relationship, have a greater understanding of the skills involved in communication and be able to use them. Have a greater understanding of yourself. Have an awareness of other types of helping relationships.

How will I be assessed?

Observation, oral and written feedback on task, peer assessment, question and answers.

Once you have successfully completed the introductory course to could move onto further levels, which include an Introduction to Basic Counselling Skills (level 1), and Certificate in Basic Counselling Skills (level 2). You could go on to gain further higher certificates and diplomas.
