MPA (The MBA for the Public Sector)
Highly acclaimed for its research and thinking about leadership, strategy, policy-making, and management, Warwick Business School leads the way in developing future leaders. When we launched the Warwick MPA it was a real trailblazer, the first public sector MBA of its kind in the UK.
WBS has a long-standing commitment to work, not only in the private business sector but also in the public and voluntary sectors. This provides opportunities for us to combine and compare perspectives across the three sectors.
The Warwick MPA study programme is designed and delivered by leading academics and practising professionals, and continues to address the changing needs of the public, private, and voluntary sectors. We are committed to developing academic theory which reflects the complexities facing you as a manager in the public and voluntary sectors, and to testing concepts and frameworks against your realities. We believe that your learning within the Warwick MPA will flourish through applying challenging concepts to practical problems. The Warwick MPA is shaping tomorrow’s thinking and practice. Come and be part of it.
The public, private, and third sectors are all grappling with rapid change on many fronts. All over the world there are far-reaching programmes to reform and improve government and public services. The challenges facing you, working in this field, are demanding: the Warwick MPA can help you make sense of this complexity. Our programme is specifically designed to help you address the fundamental changes which are taking place in the public and voluntary sectors, so that you can manage them more effectively. We will help you explore the consequences of these changes for the role, purposes, and nature of democracy, governance, public policy, leadership, and management. The Warwick MPA has been running for over 10 years. We regularly review and renew its content and structure to respond to feedback from participants, employers, and other people in the world of policy and practice. For example, we now open some of our modules to participants from the Warwick MBA because of the increasing overlap between the public and private sectors. Our commitment to blending academic perspectives with active engagement with the world of practice means that while absorbing theory you will also be strengthening your leadership and management skills for maximum immediate effect in your workplace.

The University of Warwick is one of the UK’s top research universities, and has an excellent reputation for teaching quality. WBS is its largest department and offers a uniquely interdisciplinary and international approach, using all the skills and resources available to us as part of the University. The Warwick MPA builds on over 20 years of WBS research and development work in the public and voluntary sectors in the UK, and on experience gained through our international networks. We draw on the expertise of colleagues in many other departments including:
• Philosophy
• Politics
• Economics
• Law
• Sociology
• Psychology
• Warwick Medical School
The Warwick MPA attracts high-calibre professionals from across the public, voluntary, and private sectors. These include leaders and policy makers, mid-career senior managers and practitioners with clear goals for progression. You will have the opportunity to engage with leading thinkers and practitioners, share experience and exchange ideas with colleagues from a diversity of cultures and professional backgrounds, and develop an international network of colleagues, friends, and contacts. One of the really great things about the Warwick MPA is the opportunity to mix with, and learn from, people from different fields and cultures. Full-time and part-time participants from all over the world are taught together to share and exchange real world experiences and problems. We open some modules to participants from the Warwick MBA, so you’ll also get the private sector view - so important in these times of public and private partnerships.
Our approach to teaching and learning is based upon a combination of ‘high-touch’ and ’high-tech’. The Warwick MPA is supported by my.wbs, an online learning resource providing personalised course resources, timetables, notice boards and discussions, as well as all our latest news. It also enables you to stay in touch with staff and other participants between modules for debate and discussions in small seminar groups. You will need access to a computer and the internet throughout the programme.
