How to deal with challenging behaviour in the classroom

Teachers need support. A recent survey of teachers indicates that schools are experiencing more and more bad behaviour and violence. Disruption by pupils is now routine with 9 out of 10 teachers saying they have dealt with an unruly pupil this year.

A department head at a Leicestershire state secondary school told researchers: "I've been physically assaulted twice (both times the violence was aimed at another student but in their rage they hit me). I felt like going off sick but didn't - despite then being physically sick each morning at the thought of going to work and wondering whether my teeth were going to get knocked out. I feel that we get no support from government - they have no idea of the reality of inner city schools."
