Sustainability – balancing social, environmental, and economic factors for short and long term performance - is a critical issue for business. As the intensity of the debate increases, companies need to develop more sustainable business models, and HR has a key role to play in embedding the sustainability agenda throughout the businesses in which they operate.

According to a survey by McKinsey Quarterly more than 50 percent of executives consider sustainability ‘very‘ or ‘extremely‘ important in a wide range of areas, including new product development, reputation building, and overall corporate strategy. However, only 30 percent of executives say that their companies actively seek opportunities to invest in sustainability or embed it into their business practices. HR’s role in integrating sustainability initiatives is significant and practitioners will need to become a driving force in creating a culture that recognises and embeds organisation’s sustainability values.

HR leaders can effectively steer sustainable development by: developing and instilling sustainability-oriented values; helping to elicit senior management and board level support for making sustainability central to business strategy; supporting the development of new processes; and enabling the organisation to achieve broad stakeholder engagement and holistic integration.
