What you will study

The Foundation Degree encompasses both sport science modules and coaching modules. The modules provide a balanced academic and vocational programme to equip students with the knowledge and skills required for the assessment and enhancement of sports performance. The Sports Coaching field is a rewarding, challenging and dynamic profession.

Who should attend?

Entry Requirements

You should have a combination of academic qualifications, experience and motivation. Entry onto the course will be subject to an interview.

Those under 21 years of age should normally have one of the following qualifications as a minimum:

160 UCAS points from a suitable Level 3 course (A Levels, BTEC National/Level 3 Diplomas) + GCSE grade A* - C in Maths and English.

Students over the age of 21 are not always expected to have formal qualifications. Prior experiences will be taken into consideration.

It is desirable but not essential for applicants to hold a coaching qualification in their chosen sport and be actively involved in coaching at some level.

What will I be able to do on completion?

Further study

Students can go on to convert the Foundation Degree into a full degree at Leeds Metropolitan University. Other Universities may also accept applicants.

Career opportunities

Coaching, strength and conditioning, nutritionist, performance analysts are all possible career routes. These will normally require additional study.

How will I be assessed?

How you will be assessed

Assessment takes place by a variety of methods including examinations, lab reports, case studies, presentations and reflective diaries.

Would you like to coach the next Andy Murray or Wayne Rooney? Or are you a community coach wanting to develop your abilities? Either way, this course will give your coaching practice a more scientific foundation. You will use the Sport and Exercise Science centre at Thornes Park Campus and benefit from its new exercise testing laboratory and strength and conditioning suite, wide range of modern technology and well-stocked library. You will also be involved in coaching students on the College's Athlete Development Programme.
