These programmes have been designed to help you progress onto Advanced Level courses such as AS/A Levels or BTEC National Diplomas if you have not yet achieved five GCSEs at grade A*- C. They offer you the opportunity to resit some subjects you studied at school and study some which will be new to you. You will have a personal tutor to guide you in your selection of subjects and to help you decide about further study after the course.

What you will study

You will take Functional Skills or GCSE English and Mathematics unless you have already achieved a GCSE grade C or higher in the subject. You will also study Level 2 NOCN Certificate for Progression which includes Teamwork, Citizenship and Career Planning. The NOCN course allows learners to achieve a Level 2 Certificate which is equivalent to GCSE.
You will also have the opportunity to take GCSE subjects depending on your prior achievements and ability. Currently we offer Science and Sociology.


How you will learn

There will be a mixture of lectures, discussions, group work and individual study .

Your Course Structure

The NOCN structure is based around completeing seven modules (including Teamwork, Citizenship and Career Planning) all of which are assessed continuously. The GCSE and Functional Skills programmes are based around the provision and follow the same structure with a combination of coursework and exams.


Entry Requirements

You will be required to produce evidence that you have completed at least four Ds at GCSE as well as evidence of at least grade E in Maths and English (or equivalent qualification).

Attendance

Each GCSE subject course requires two and a half hours of teaching per week and a one hour workshop. In addition there is a one hour tutorial each week and individual tutorials where student and tutor will complete the Individual Learning Plan (ILP). The continuous assessment part of the course will take up seven hours of attendance per week. At least 15 hours per week will be taken up by lessons etc. Attendance at all components of the course is compulsory.
