What you will study
The course equips teachers of literacy with appropriate and relevant knowledge, understanding and personal skills. Over four modules it focuses on social factors and issues relating to language and literacy development and personal factors which affect learning. It also aims to develop your personal language and literacy skills.
DEVELOPING PERSONAL SKILLS (15 credits)
This module enables students to identify their own literacy needs, using appropriate assessment and self assessment methods. They will reflect on their own literacy development in the context of teaching and learning.
LITERACY AND THE LEARNERS (15 credits at Level 4)
This module develops an understanding of the ways in which English may be described and enables learners to analyse spoken and written language variety and change.
LITERACY THEORIES AND FRAMEWORKS (15 credits at Level 5)
This module considers the theories of language acquisition, the way in which language is learnt and the processes involved in reading, writing, speaking and listening.
LITERACY, LEARNING AND TEACHING (15 credits at Level 5)
This module will draw on theories of teaching reading, writing, speaking and listening and apply them to literacy teaching and learning.
How you will learn
The course will be delivered through a variety of teaching methods including taught sessions, group discussions, directed tasks, presentations, self study, tutorials and workshops.
How you will be assessed
You will be assessed by a combination of written reports and a portfolio of evidence of your learning. A minimum of four assessed teaching observations will be undertaken between October and May.
Entry Requirements
A level 4 Teaching Certificate eg Certificate/Post Graduate Certificate in Education, City & Guilds 7407, 7304, 7305 Teaching Certificate.
* Experience of teaching adult basic skills.
* Currently employed to teach adult basic literacy skills for a minimum of 75 hours
over the course of the Certificate.
