What you will study

You will complete three units:-
Unit 01 – The Principles of Infection Prevention and Control. An introduction to national and local policies and employer/employee responsibilities. You will gain an understanding of how procedures and risk assessment can help to minimise the risk of an outbreak of infection and the importance of good personal hygiene.
Unit 02 – Causes and Spread of Infection. This unit will explore the causes of infection and which common illnesses can result, the methods of transmission, the conditions needed for organisms to grow, the ways infection can enter the body and key factors leading to infection.


Unit 03 – Cleaning, Decontamination and Waste Management. This unit will give you an understanding of the correct way to maintain a clean environment, the procedures for decontaminating an area from infection, and the best methods for dealing with waste materials.


How you will learn

This is a distance learning course and you will be issued with workbooks on which to base your studies. You will be guided by a qualified tutor who will plan your course with you and give you written feedback on the work you do. They will keep in contact with you by telephone, post and/or email.


How you will be assessed

Included with the workbooks, there are short question and answer assessment tasks for you to complete. After you have completed each unit your tutor will give you detailed written feedback. On successful completion of all units you will be awarded a certificate.


Entry Requirements

There are no formal entry qualifications. However, you will need to demonstrate commitment and motivation to work mainly on your own through the specially prepared learning materials.


Attendance

The length of the programme is 12 weeks. As this is a distance learning course, you are not expected to attend the College.
