Bricklaying Training Course

What topics are covered by the course?

This practical Bricklaying Course is set out to enable you to learn the skills of bricklaying. The course will give you as many bricklaying skills as possible. It will teach you everything from mixing mortar to pointing to being capable of building your walls plumb, vertical and square.
You will learn different types of bond including Stretcher, English, Flemish, block-work, brick capping and arch construction.
Tasks will include:
Constructing a pillar with corbaling
Forming an arch
Spanning openings
Constructing a garden/retaining wall
Constructing a cavity wall
Ties and joist hangers
Inserting lintels (stone and steel)
Damp coursing
Block work wall plates

In addition to the practical skills you will learn about:
Foundations
Extensions
Setting out
Cavity wall specifications
Structures of brickwork
Estimating and calculations
Business aspects
The needles method of making openings in existing walls
Inserting RSJ’s and lintels
Awareness of planning permission and building control

Skills learnt will culminate in the construction of a small extension.

How will I be assessed?

This is a practical hands-on course - students' work will be continually monitored by the course tutor.

9.00 am - approx 4.00 pm weekdays, or 8.30 am - approx 5.00 pm weekends
