What you will study
Improving language skills, both written and oral; "Of Mice and Men" by John Steinbeck; creative writing; spoken language study; various non-literary texts. Emphasis will be placed on improving your written, oral and comprehension skills.
Your Course Structure
Four controlled assessments and three speaking and listening assesments which constitute 60% of total mark.
One 2hr exam in Summer term which totals 40% of final mark.
How you will learn
Classroom based lessons which will prepare you for controlled assessment tasks, group work based tasks to encourage varied viewpoints and completion of model exam papers to prepare you for the final exam.
How you will be assessed
Through controlled assessments (CAs) which are internally marked and moderated. This replaces coursework which is no longer available with the AQA GCSE English syllabus. The controlled assessments combined are worth 60% of your total overall mark. Additionally you will sit one two-hour examination, which is worth 40% of your total overall mark.
Entry Requirements
GCSE English grade D or above minimum. Prospective students who have achieved Key/Functional Skills Level 2 or Adult Literacy Level 2, will be required to sit preliminary tests to assess ability.
This requirement also includes prospective Pre GCSE or Access students who have not attained GCSE English grade D.
Attendance
You are expected to attend all timetabled classes. You may also want to come into College to visit the library. The course runs from September to June on either Monday evening 6 pm - 8.45 pm or Wednesday afternoon 1 pm - 3.45 pm.
