What you will study
You will learn how to analyse language at a linguistic level and study a variety of spoken and written texts.
In the first year you will:
* Learn how to analyse texts using linguistic methods
* Study the differences between speech and writing
* Explore how language is influenced by social contexts, focusing on the topics Language and Technology, and Language and Gender.
You will also develop your expertise as a writer by producing a variety of written texts for your coursework.
In the second year you will study:
* How children acquire and use language
* How language has changed and is continuing to develop, focusing on 1700s onwards.
You will also investigate your own topic of interest for your coursework.

In the second year you will study:
* How children acquire and use language
* How language has changed and is continuing to develop, focusing on 1700s onwards
You will also investigate your own topic of interest and produce a media text as part of the A2 coursework unit.
How you will learn
* Lessons will consist of group and whole class discussion.
* You will have the opportunity to practise and develop your written skills.
* You will be expected to work independently on your coursework.
* You will have one-to-one support from your tutor.
How you will be assessed
You will be assessed by exam (60%) and coursework (40%) at AS and A2.
Entry Requirements
Five GCSEs at grade A* - C including English Language. An interest in the way language works. You will also need Level 2 numeracy qualifications. If you do not have the relevant level of qualification, we can assess your current level of literacy and/or numeracy.
Attendance
The course takes one year for AS Level and two years for A Level. You will be expected to attend all classes as specified on your timetable and all personal tutorial sessions.
