What you will study

You will study the practical skills required to complete the NVQ Level 2 Diploma in Hairdressing including health and safety, reception duties, customer service, consultation, shampooing and conditioning, cutting hair using basic techniques, styling and finishing hair, setting and dressing hair, perming and neutralising, colouring hair and giving customers a positive impression of yourself and organisation. Also included in the course is a qualification in Employee Rights and Responsibilities, where you will study important topics such as contracts of employment, pay and holiday entitlement.

You will also be expected to work towards Functional Skills qualifications at Level 1 Maths and Level 1 English unless you have already achieved an equivalent GCSE in Maths and English.

There will be opportunities to attend training from companies such as Balmain hair extensions and Loreal, and to enter internal and external competitions such as world skills. Optional trips include Salon International at Londons Excel exhibition centre and Hair shows and competions at Blackpool Winter Gardens.

How you will learn

You will be in College one day/evening per week and undertake modules of study, including both theory and practice. Some training and assessment may take place in the workplace and home study will be required.

How you will be assessed

Assessment will be continuous through oral and written tests, assignments and practical work. Practical assessment will take place on real clients in College, and an assessor will visit you in the salon to carry out practical assessment and monitor your progress. Certification will be accredited on completion of your portfolio of evidence and achievement of Functional Skills.

Entry Requirements

Candidates must complete a skills check test and attend an interview with a Hairdressing tutor. You will also need Level 1 literacy and numeracy qualifications. If you do not have the relevant level of qualification, we can assess your current level of literacy and/or numeracy.
