Your Course Structure
This is a creative design course which is mostly practical, with artistic, research and theoretical content. This also includes day visits and an international residential trip. You will meet regularly with a Personal Tutor who will support your studies throughout the course and in Year 2 you will receive guidance on applying to higher education or employment.
How you will learn
You will be taught through workshop-based sessions that encourage hands on experience of industry standard software and techniques.
You will use industry software and hardware to produce posters, business stationery, web sites, product packaging, magazine editorial, point of sale products, t-shirts and corporate indentity. You will also learn about the graphic design industry and contemporary art, and be visited by a number of guest speakers.
Study visits are important elements of this course. In previous years the international trips have been to Disneyland Resort Paris and Barcelona. Day trips have included Royal Armouries in Leeds, and the National Media Museum in Bradford. Students will also undertake higher education visits, including the University of Huddersfield.
How you will be assessed
You will be assessed through assignments and practical project work that count towards your final grade. For each unit your work will be assessed as Pass, Merit or Distinction, and the qualification is gained by successfully completing all of the units. Your tutor will provide regular feedback and maintain a record of assessment which will be internally verified.
Entry Requirements
Five GCSE passes at grade A* - C (including English plus either an Art or Design or technical subject), or a Level 2/First Diploma. Applicants should also provide a portfolio of visual work in support of their application. You will also need Level 2 literacy and numeracy qualifications. If you do not have the relevant level of qualification, we can assess you.
Attendance
The course is two years full-time, and you should be able to attend Monday to Friday for approximately 16 hours per week, plus a similar amount of time for private study. Extra help with your English/Maths can be arranged.
