About the Assessors Award
The Assessor Training course is designed to teach you the practical skills to support and assess candidates and give you the knowledge you need. There are NO tests or exams you must pass to become an Assessor, instead you are supported to build a portfolio of evidence including examples of your candidates work, assessment plans, your feedback to candidates, questions about assessing and discussions with your assessor.
Firstly, training in the classroom will set the foundations for assessing and give you the knowledge of NVQ’s and the assessor’s role. Topics covered include knowledge of the NVQ, the National Occupational Standards, good and bad assessing, assessment planning, feedback, rules and regulations and roles and responsibilities. Tutor Support is also provided by your personal mentor who will provide 1 to 1 support via distance learning.
“C Company provide a significant amount of practical and training support to trainees and the quality of candidate work demonstrates an excellent understanding of assessing vocational achievement”.
There are three units to complete and each carries a number of credits. You do not need to complete all units, but we recommend that you do complete them all to ensure you are fully qualified:
Unit 1: Understanding the principles and practices of assessment
(3 credits)- does not require practical
Unit 2: Assess Occupational Competence in the work environment
(6 credits)- requires practical
Unit 3: Assess Vocational Skills, Knowledge and Understanding
(6 credits)- requires practical
Once you have completed all the modules for each of the 3 units, you will then complete practical sessions with real life candidates, fully supported by your personal mentor. This will involve planning with candidates work to complete, giving them feedback, carrying out observations, setting questions and assignments and helping them gather evidence that meets the required standards.
When you feel confident with your candidates, your personal mentor will carry out a series of observations and discussions with you to ensure your assessing practice and knowledge meets the required standard. This is not a pass/fail exercise so if you do not meet the standards, your personal mentor will explain why and reassess you until you are! We want you to be successful so we will support you until you are competent.
