This course is designed to enable students to acquire a basic ability to communicate with Deaf people using BSL. It also aims to provide students with information about Deaf people, the Deaf community and Deaf culture.

Most courses are held weekly on a part time and evening class basis.

By the end of the course students will be able to:

Understand BSL sufficiently well to:
• Identify relevant data and facts from simple and commonly used expressions to meet day to day requirements.
• Identify instructions and guidance from simple commonly used expressions.
• In face to face situations, acknowledge the other signer politely, using appropriate convention
• Seek clarification and confirmation when needed, using appropriate strategies
• Take appropriate action on the basis of instructions and guidance received

Express themselves in BSL sufficiently well to:
• Address, greet and take leave of a Deaf sign language user.
• Identify and use a range of simple, commonly use question forms
• Select the forms approriate to the information sought and the context.
