Holders of Air Operators Certificates for public transport flights are required to ensure that commercial balloon pilots and ground crew have received suitable training in basic first aid and fire safety every 3 years. This course satisfies this requirement as detailed in chapter 6 of CAP611.

Candidates

Commercial balloon pilots and ground crew are required to complete First Aid and Fire Safety training every three years. The course is also suitable for private pilots and ground crew members.

Basic First Aid First Aid

Introduction to First Aid

Primary and secondary surveys for life threatening injuries
Resuscitation (Theoretical & Practical)

1) Establish airway
2) Carry out cardiopulmonary resuscitation
3) Place casualties in recovery position

Burns (hot and cold)
Injuries to skull, spine, chest and extremities
Internal injuries
Bleeding (internal and external)
Shock
Moving of casualties
Particular problems related to injured children and babies
Risk and safety assessment of in-flight medical emergencies

Fire Safety

Basic chemistry of combustion
Characteristics of liquid propane gas
Characteristics of liquid propane fire and of a vapour propane fire
Types of fire extinguishers – identification, properties and operation
Practical fire fighting on a vapour propane fire
Use of halon
Professional inspection of company fire extinguishers - frequency and procedure
Launch site requirements and typography

Delivery

The Course is delivered over either a full day or two half days or equivalent. We have no problems fitting in with existing work shift patterns and are happy to teach the course early morning, late evening or overnight if required!

As with most of our courses, delivery is through a mixture of tutor led and practical sessions.

The way in which the Course is delivered is varied dependant on the nature of the group and their existing knowledge.

All participants receive course booklets.

Assessment

The course is assessed by a mixture of ongoing tutor assessment of practical skills throughout the course and a written exam covering first aid at the end of the course.

Participants successfully completing the course receive certification recognising their achievement which is valid for 3 years.
