This module provides theoretical and practical knowledge in the techniques of asbestos sample identification using polarised light microscopy (PLM). This course will cover asbestos fibre types, properties and uses, set up and use of a polarised light microscope, analysis theory including colour, pleochroism, birefringence, signs of elongation, extinction and dispersion staining, analysis of bulk samples and practical work. This includes a written examination and practical assessment. For those undertaking analysis of bulk samples on a routine basis, UKAS now require that this qualification is obtained.
