What is periodic training?

Periodic training is continuing professional development for LGV drivers and carries on throughout the professional drivers career no matter how infrequently they drive.

The required 35 hours of the CPC are held over 5 days (7 hours per day) and 35 hours over a 5 year period thereafter.

It is important that you allow yourself enough time for drivers to complete the training within the five year period otherwise they will not be allowed to drive professionally until they do, the sooner they train the sooner knowledge and skills gained will enhance their professionalism. It is believed that there will be no extension to the September 2014 deadline as it is a European Directive 2003/59/EC.

The Driver CPC qualification for bus & coach drivers (PCV) commenced September 2008 and has to be completed by September 2013.

Periodic training is designed to be complementary to the individual driver’s work and be relevant to their every day job.

Some of the subjects covered:

Drivers Hours & Tachographs

Safe Vehicle Operations & Loading

Safe & Economic Driving

Health & Safety

Systems & Procedures for Safe, Efficient & Secure Transport Operations.

Cost per person per day: £60 + Registration fees.

In addition if you require an ADR license (Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road) 21 hours of an initial course (3 days), or 7 hours if a Refresher course (1 day) can be counted towards your driver CPC hours if the training provider is registered with the SQA & JAUPT (Joint Approvals Unit for Periodic Training)

Anyone sitting the ADR initial or refresher course who wishes to use the course as a credit towards their CPC (3 days initial, 1 day refresher) will be required to pay an additional cost of £35 per day inclusive of registration in addition to the cost of the ADR training.

All of the above costs are subject to Vat where applicable.

There are a few exceptions to drivers for example:

Vehicles used for non-commercial carriage of passengers or goods for personal use.

Vehicles undergoing road tests for technical development, repair or maintenance purposes, or new or rebuilt vehicles which have not yet been put into service.

Vehicles used in the course of driving lessons for the purpose of enabling that person to obtain a driving license or a Driver CPC

Vehicles carrying material or equipment to be used by that person in the course of his or her work, provided that driving that vehicle does not constitute the drivers principal activity (an example of a driver under this exemption also known as “incidental driver” would be a scaffolder who drives a load of poles and boards from the yard to site and then spends the working day erecting the scaffold. In this case, driving a commercial vehicle is considered incidental to their main occupation.)

Vehicles with a maximum authorized speed not exceeding 45 km/h

Vehicles used by, or under the control of, the armed forces, civil defence, the fire service and forces responsible for maintaining public order

Vehicles used in states of emergency or assigned to rescue missions.
