The course will use discuss general principles of the benefits system and use case studies to highlight the circumstances in which different benefits or tax credits may be relevant. It will include:

•Means tested benefits such as Income Support and Pension Credit and the Social Fund
•Benefits which help to pay housing costs such as mortgage, rent and council tax
•Benefits based on national insurance contributions such as the State Retirement Pension and Bereavement Benefits
•Employee related benefits such as Statutory Sick Pay
•Tax credits including Working Tax Credit and Child Tax Credit
•Benefits relevant for people with disabilities and those who have limited capacity for work
•How to claim benefits and tax credits
•How to challenge decisions refusing benefit
