Renewed warnings of an 'epidemic' of diabetes as cases hit a peak in 2007 of 2.5million with 167,000 new cases recorded between April 2007 and March 2008.The rise is more than double the increase of 83,000 recorded the year before. At the same time, the number of people registered as obese has gone up, from almost 4.8million last year to five million.

This e-learning course will benefit individuals and organisations by having trained health care professionals who have a deeper understanding of diabetes mellitus.

The subject matter expert is Lydia Burke, MSc, BSc, PGCHE, RGN/RMN. She worked as a Nurse Practitioner in Primary Care for 11 years, setting up and running a busy Diabetes Clinic. She now works for Middlesex University as Programme Leader for the Advanced Diploma in Diabetes Care, teaching nurses working in primary, community and acute health care. She maintains close links with clinical practice and has completed some research in the patients experiences of having diabetes.
