Social psychology goes naturally with a leaning towards believing that we are made, rather than born, what we are: a definite position on what is sometimes called the nature-nurture debate. We often explain people's behaviour in terms of their previous personal experience, which may be quite different from your own. In other words, we seek the causes of behaviour in the individual's interaction with his environment. Since the work of Sigmund Freud, there has been widespread awareness that is not merely the current environment that matters, but also the environment during earlier development and this course examines the effects on the individual in their attitudes, perception and prejudices.
