Most ecotherapists believe that environmental crisis and cultural and political processes have created a deep and lasting impact on the human psyche and soul. In turn, our states of mind are expressed in the way we relate, or not, to the natural world. These inner and outer worlds mirror and support one another, and therefore, a healthy ecosystem is inseparable from a healthy psyche. According to Pulitzer prize winning sociobiologist Edward O Wilson, PhD, of Harvard University, people have an inherent biological need to be in contact with the out-of-doors. He calls it ‘biophilia’ and believes that nature may hold the key to our aesthetic, intellectual, cognitive and even spiritual, satisfaction. Through nature therapy, or Ecotherapy, this biophilia can be harnessed and people connected to nature. Once connected, participants strengthen their conviction towards environmental issues, take more seriously their responsibility to live lightly on the earth and strengthen their health.
