Lack of motivation and engagement can be familiar challenges to care within psychiatric settings. This 1-day course is designed to provide participants with a broad overview of the theoretical background to motivation and engagement. It provides an opportunity to practice some of the basic skills that can be helpful to increase patients activity.

The course has been written specifically for unqualified or newly qualified staff who work on a day-to-day basis with patients, and who wish to enhance their knowledge and skills. Therefore, candidates do not need to be clinically trained to attend.

This is an interactive and practice-based course, with the following aims:
To understand the potential barriers to motivation and engagement

To learn practical techniques to assist patients

To begin to learn how mental disorder can impact upon activity

To begin to understand how we can make it worse

To practise how to plan, prepare and use some motivational techniques

The course is interactive and uses some practical exercises to enhance learning. It is designed to build confidence.
