This 1-day course is based on the training guidelines recommended by CSCI and published by Skills for Care and is aimed at non-clinically trained housing and project workers who need to be familiar with the main classes of medication used, why and how they may be used, and the various side-effects that may be encountered by clients. The relevant legislation and guidelines are covered along with issues such as self-medication, liaising with health care professionals and deciding when to omit medication. The aims are to be aware of the legislation and guidance that controls the prescribing, dispensing, administration, storage and disposal of medication.

The course covers the following topics:

• Medicines Act 1968 + amendments

• Misuse of Drugs Act 1971 (Controlled Drugs) + amendments

• Health & Safety at Work Act 1974

• COSHH Regulations 2002 (as amended)

• Care Standards Act 2000 (Receipt, storage and administration of medicines)

• Access to Health Records Act 1990

• Data Protection Act 1998

• Hazardous Waste Regulations 2005

• Administration & control of medicines in care homes and children’s services June 2003 (*guidance)

• Understand the legal framework, and how the organisation’s policies and procedures reflect these, for safe handling of medicines (prescribing, dispensing, administration, storage and disposal) by all workers.

All of our care courses meet the requirement of the Care Standards Act 2000 and are approved by Skills for care

The course is classroom based with facilitated group discussions. At the end of the course delegates complete a multiple choice test paper and receive a certificate of attendance. There is no mandatory re-qualification period but it’s recommended that a refresher is taken at least every 3 years.

The course duration is between 4 – 6 GLH
