Gestalt Therapy, derived mainly from the work of Fritz Perls, is a practical Humanistic therapy concerned with helping people mature emotionally. It originated in Germany during the early decades of the 20th century, mainly as a psychology of perception (‘gestalt’ is named after the German word for pattern, form, structure or configuration). Clients are encouraged to bring their feelings into the present and to act out feelings or express them in a fantasy. The goal of the Gestalt therapist is to promote feelings and prevent their avoidance and to help the participants, therefore, to function in a more integrated way.
