Sheet Piling and Cofferdams - Design (1.5 days)

The cost of temporary works is a significant portion of the cost of a civil engineering or building project. It is therefore essential that proper attention is paid to the economic design, construction and safety aspects of these works.

Design will be based on CIRIA method of design, adapted to Limit State, which is an updated version of the simple process used successfully for the past 60 years. This can be used for manual calculations and for checking more complex computer-based designs, and is also available itself as software. The lectures will be consolidated by short tutorials, so participants will need calculators.

Sources of information and alternative design methods are given towards the end of the course.

Course Objectives:
At the end of the workshop, participants should be able to:-

Decide when sheet piles are the best option
Calculate the loads imposed on sheet pile structures including working
loads.
Identify the factors to be considered for a safe and economic design.
Be able to do a simple sheet pile design by hand, and use these to check computer designs.
Relate the practical aspects of sheet piling to design.
