GCSE German Course Outline
While learning GCSE German, you’ll complete ten formative assessments during your course and four exams on completion of your course. For each of the four exams, you can elect to sit either Foundation level (for grades G-C) or Higher level (for grades D-A). It is perfectly permissible to sit some exams to Foundation level and others to Higher level. Your results from the formative assessments will help you to decide which levels to sit.
Assessment Breakdown
Formative Assessments 1-9: a mixture of speaking and writing exercises
Formative Assessment 10: listening, reading, writing exercise and speaking exercises
Listening Exam: a series of questions related to a German audio recording. Most questions will require you to write an answer either in German or non-verbally, although some may require an answer in English. The test must be completed within 30 minutes (Foundation) or 40 minute (Higher) and is worth 25% of your overall grade.
Reading Exam: a series of questions related to written German material. Most questions will require you to write an answer either in German or non-verbally, although some may require an answer in English. The test must be completed within 30 minutes (Foundation) or 50 minutes (Higher) and is worth 25% of your overall grade.
Speaking Exam: 3 tasks requiring you to speak in German. There will be the opportunity to prepare some material in advance of the test. The test will last 8-10 minutes (Foundation) or 10-12 minutes (Higher) and is worth 25% of your overall grade.
Writing Exam: a series of questions requiring you to write in German. The test must be completed within 40 minutes (Foundation) or 60 minutes (Higher) and is worth 25% of your overall grade.
Notes
Formative assessments are intended to help both you and your tutor measure your progress through the course, highlighting any areas where revision is necessary. Formative assessments do not, however, count towards your final grade.
Speaking exercises require you to record yourself speaking in German. The recorded material is sent to your tutor for assessment.
Written exercises require you to write in German. For example, you may be required to write a letter to an imaginary German pen-pal.
Listening exercises require you to listen to a German audio recording and then answer questions relating to this recording.
Reading exercises require you to read material written in German and then answer questions relating to this material.
Exams are held in June of each year. Please note that exam fees are additional to your course fees.
