Safeguarding children is becoming an increasingly widely talked about issue and something that people working in a wide range of disciplines need to be aware of. The need to take measures to safeguard a child can result from many factors and is not a matter that can be taken lightly.
Safeguarding Children provides an outline of the relevant legislation relating to children, the reasons why a child may become known to social services or other agencies, and the steps that may be taken to ensure the child’s welfare and wellbeing needs are met. Case studies from real life events, such as Victoria Climbié are used to provide students with an example of the kinds of issues facing those working in this challenging area. The course further discusses the communication techniques it is important for practitioners to have grasped before beginning work with service users.
Successful completion of the course provides students wishing to become social workers, teachers, doctors, nurses, childminders and any others who come into contact with children and their families, the underpinning knowledge they need to ensure the child’s welfare is paramount. It provides the basic knowledge students will need of the legislative framework and the assessment and care proceeding steps.
Objectives
After studying this course, students will be able to:
Demonstrate their understanding of legislation relating to safeguarding children
Understand the assessment process
Demonstrate their ability to apply theory to their practical work with service users
Identify issues which could lead to child protection measures being taken
Discuss what steps should be taken when a child’s safety and wellbeing is in question
Evaluate the effectiveness of legislation and proceedings drawing on conclusions from previous cases.
Study Method
This course can be studied at your own pace. There are no deadlines for assignments, however you must complete the course within 12 months from the date you received the course.
Qualification
Level 3 Award in Understanding Safeguarding Children, Plus a UK Open LEarning Diploma.
At the end of this course successful learners will receive a Level 3 NCFE Award certificate of achievement. That means that it is independently accredited at a level of learning equivalent to level 3 on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) for England, Wales and Northern Ireland'
Awarding Body Information
NCFE is recognised as an awarding body by the qualification regulators ('regulators') for England, Wales and Northern Ireland. The regulators are the Office of the Qualifications and Examinations Regulator (Ofqual) in England, the Department for Children, Education, Lifelong Learning and Skills (DCELLS) in Wales and the Council for Curriculum, Examinations and Assessment (CCEA) in Northern Ireland.

Assessments
Assessment takes the form of a series of tutor marked assignments you can send these to your tutor by e-mail or post for marking. There is no word count for these assignments however you must prove to the tutor that you have fully understood the question asked, and one sentence answers will be rejected.
Entry Requirements
There are no entry requirements.
Location
The programme is home or work-based enabling students to complete the course without having to attend scheduled college teaching sessions.
Tutor Support
Throughout the course, students will receive tutor support by email and by post.
