High fixed costs, such as occupied floor-space, are not usually desirable and capital decisions that require expanded buildings can be expensive. So there is generally a strong desire to minimise the use of space taken up by the business process. Floor Space Utilisation (FSU) is a measure of the sales revenue generated per square metre of floor space, and demonstrates how effective use of space can reduce the fixed cost element of the unit. The FSU measure can be applied at cell level or across the whole site for internal benchmarking. In order to achieve an increased FSU value the utilised floor space has to be reduced. This often means rethinking a process layout and eliminating inventory to reduce the necessary space to the minimum. This programme looks at the range of issues involved, and how an organisation might set about improving them, and achieving continuous improvement.
