Lean philosophy uses concepts of ‘waste’ removal to drive competitive advantage and process improvements. In ‘traditional’ lean systems the focus is on internal value chain improvement. However, as the value stream actually includes the complete value adding (and non-value adding) process, from conception of requirement back through to ‘raw material’ source and back again to the customer's receipt of product or service, there is a clear need to extend this internal waste removal to the complete supply chain, leading to significant productivity gains, and allow you to work with suppliers and customers more quickly and more effectively. This programme explains at the tools and techniques involved in Value Stream Mapping, and explores their practical use.
